First Described (Guide)
(Eyton, 1845)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 300 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Thailand (B) (NB), Vietnam (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and conversion to agriculture, forest fires are the main threats.

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini) and Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii), both of which have been considered subspecies this species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • charltonii (Eyton, 1845)   -  Southern Thailand and southern Burma to Peninsular Malaysia.
  • atjenensis Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley, 1940   -  Aceh, northern Sumatra. Old records from southern Sumatra. validity of this subspecies has been questioned.
  • graydoni (Sharpe & Chubb, C, 1906)   -  Sabah, north-eastern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sabah Partridge (Arborophila graydoni).


Similar Species
Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus) which has plainer upperside, heavy black breast markings, reddish bill with greenish tip, greenish to yellowish-green legs and distinctive ear-patch and collar, Green-legged Partridge (Arborophila chloropus) and Annam Partridge (Arborophila merlini) by chestnut ear-patch and collar.
