Southern Cameroon and south-western Central African Republic east to south-western Uganda (Bwamba Forest), south to north-western Angola (south to Cuanza Norte, northern Lunda Norte) and south-central and south-western Zaire; a few isolated records in recent decades from Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana indicate existence of a small population in forests of Upper Guinea.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in monotypic genus Verreauxia, but appears close to Rufous Piculet (Sasia abnormis) and White-browed Piculet (Sasia ochracea).
