Subspecies
Subspecies hasbroucki, described from southern Myanmar and southern Thailand, is synonymous with reichenowi. Birds from southern Assam, Bangladesh and south-western Myanmar sometimes separated as subspecies querulivox on basis of paler coloration, but this matched by individuals from south-eastern Asia.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ochracea Hodgson, 1836   -  Northern India (northern Uttar Pradesh) and central Nepal east to northern and central Thailand and Vietnam.
  • kinneari Stresemann, 1929   -  Extreme northern Vietnam (Tonkin) and adjacent southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi).
  • reichenowi Hesse, 1911   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim) and south-western Thailand south to Isthmus of Kra.
