Vagrant to St Pierre and Miquelon (P).

Forms a superspecies with Brown-throated Wren (Troglodytes brunneicollis), House Wren (Troglodytes musculus), Clarion Wren (Troglodytes tanneri), Cozumel Wren (Troglodytes beani) and Cobb's Wren (Troglodytes cobbi) and all have often been treated as conspecific, as suggested by field observations, but recent DNA analyses indicate that present species and first two are three separate species. The others, isolated on islands, likely also to be distinct. Intergrades with Brown-throated Wren (Troglodytes brunneicollis) in southern Arizona. Birds breeding in eastern part of range (from Michigan and Quebec south to Kentucky and West Virginia) described as subspecies baldwini, but poorly differentiated from, and therefore merged with, nominate. Species name domesticus has priority, but use of aedon almost universal and this has led to the proposal that the name domesticus be officially suppressed in order to favour stability in nomenclature.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).

The following 25 subspecies are recognised:

• intermedius Cabanis, 1861   -  Southern Mexico (south-eastern Oaxaca, Tabasco) south to central Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• inquietus S. F. Baird, 1864   -  Extreme south-western Costa Rica and Panama (east to Darién). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• carychrous Wetmore, 1957   -  Coiba I, off southern Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• pallidipes A. R. Phillips, 1986   -  Pearl Is (San Jose and Pedro González, possibly also Bayoneta and Santelmo), off south-eastern Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• guadeloupensis (Cory, 1886)   -  Guadeloupe, in northern Lesser Antilles. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• rufescens (Lawrence, 1877)   -  Dominica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• mesoleucus (P. L. Sclater, 1876)   -  St Lucia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• musicus (Lawrence, 1878)   -  St Vincent. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• grenadensis (Lawrence, 1878)   -  Grenada, in southern Lesser Antilles. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• tobagensis Lawrence, 1888   -  Tobago. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• atopus Oberholser, 1904   -  Northern Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• effutitus Wetmore, 1958   -  North-eastern Colombia (Guajira Peninsula and extreme north-eastern Magdalena). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• striatulus (Lafresnaye, 1845)   -  Western and central Colombia and western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• columbae Stone, 1899   -  Eastern Andes in Venezuela and Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• clarus Berlepsch and Hartert, 1902   -  Venezuela (except west), Trinidad, the Guianas and eastern Colombia south to north-eastern Peru and northern and western Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• albicans Berlepsch and Taczanowski, 1884   -  South-western Colombia and western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• musculus J. F. Naumann, 1823   -  Central, eastern and southern Brazil (south to Mato Grosso), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• bonariae Hellmayr, 1919   -  North-eastern Argentina, Uruguay and extreme south-eastern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• puna Berlepsch and Stolzmann, 1896   -  Northern and eastern Peru and north-western Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• audax Tschudi, 1844   -  Arid western coast of Peru (from Trujillo south to Pisco). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• carabayae Chapman and Griscom, 1924   -  Central and southern Peru (Juní­n south to Puno). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• tecellatus d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837   -  Extreme south-western Peru and northern Chile (Lluta Valley). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• rex Berlepsch and Leverkühn, 1890   -  Central and eastern Bolivia, northern Argentina and western Paraguay. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• atacamensis Hellmayr, 1924   -  Northern Chile. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
• chilensis Lesson, 1830   -  From central Chile (southern from Aconcagua) and central Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
