Voice
Like that of Banded Wren (Thryophilus pleurostictus), a varied patchwork of loud, clear notes, some trills, hoots, 'chew-chew', and chipping notes.

Subspecies
Relationships with Rufous-and-white Wren (Thryophilus rufalbus) uncertain.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cinereus Brewster, 1889   -  North-western Mexico (north-eastern Sonora south to northern Sinaloa and western Chihuahua).
  • sinaloa (Baird, 1864)   -  Central Sinaloa and adjacent western Durango south to Michoacán.
  • russeus Nelson, 1903   -  Central Guerrero east to western Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.
