Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • nisorius (Sclater, PL, 1870)   -  South-central Mexico (Michoacán east to Puebla).
  • oaxacae (Brodkorb, 1942)   -  Southern Mexico (Guerrero east to Oaxaca).
  • acaciarum (Brodkorb, 1942)   -  Southern Mexico (Chiapas).
  • oblitus (van Rossem, 1934)   -  Pacific lowlands from eastern Chiapas south to western El Salvador.
  • pleurostictus (Sclater, 1860)   -  Eastern Guatemala (Zacapa).
  • lateralis Dickey & van Rossem, 1927   -  Central and eastern El Salvador and south-western Honduras.
  • ravus Ridgway, 1903   -  Pacific lowlands of Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica.
