First Described (Guide)
(Moore, 1941)

Habitat
Thorn-forest and arid open to semi-open areas with scattered trees, as well as secondary growth. From 600 - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Mexico (B) (NB).

South-western Mexico, from southern Jalisco and Colima to western Guerrero.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture including citrus plantations and cattle-ranching is the main threat.

Voice
A bouncing 'hoot, hoot, hoot-hoo-hoo-oo-o', like that of Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii), but rougher.

Subspecies
Otus kennicottii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii), Balsas Screech-Owl (Megascops seductus) and Pacific Screech-Owl (Megascops cooperi) following AOU (1998) and moved to the genus Megascops following AOU (2003).

Sometimes considered to form superspecies with Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii), Pacific Screech-Owl (Megascops cooperi) and Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio). Often treated as subspecies of Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) or Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii), but differs in eye colour and vocalizations. Birds from Colima sometimes separated as subspecies colimensis.

No subspecies.
