Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Blue-capped Hummingbird (Eupherusa cyanophrys) and White-tailed Hummingbird (Eupherusa poliocerca).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

nelsoni Ridgway, 1910 - Eastern and south-eastern Mexico.
eximia (DeLattre, 1843) - Extreme eastern Mexico south through highlands to central Nicaragua.
egregia Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868 - Highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama.
