Habitat
Cloud-forest, evergreen subtropical and semi-humid forest, forest edge and adjacent coffee fincas. From 800 - 2,440 m.

Range (Guide)

Mexico (B) (NB).

Pacific slope of Guerrero (Sierra Madre del Sur) and western Oaxaca, southern Mexico.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearing for corn, fruit and coffee, with forests at higher elevations being destroyed by cutting for lumber, are the main threats.

Voice
A buzzy 'chip', given in series to become a trill. A high-pitched, accelerated warbling song.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Blue-capped Hummingbird (Eupherusa cyanophrys) and Stripe-tailed Hummingbird (Eupherusa eximia) and sometimes regarded as conspecific with former, but morphological differences justify their separation as two full species.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Berylline Hummingbird (Amazilia beryllina) which has rufous tail and lacks green belly. Not known to occur sympatrically with Blue-capped Hummingbird (Eupherusa cyanophrys), in which male has blue crown but females are indistinguishable.
