Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis). Southern subspecies cyanoleuca has in past been treated as a full species. Subspecies fuscopilea sometimes merged with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
senegalensis (Linnaeus, 1766) - Senegambia east to Ethiopia and south to western Kenya, north-western Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
fuscopilea Reichenow, 1906 - Sierra Leone to southern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and Congo Basin.
cyanoleuca (Vieillot, 1818) - North-western Tanzania south to Angola, Botswana and north-eastern South Africa.
