Subspecies
Garrulax canorus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Hwamei (Garrulax canorus) and Taiwan Hwamei (Garrulax taewanus) following Collar (2006).
Formerly treated as conspecific with Taiwan Hwamei (Garrulax taewanus), but differs significantly in plumage, morphometrics and genetics, and to some degree in voice.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
canorus (Linnaeus, 1758) - South-eastern China from southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi, Hubei, south-eastern Henan and southern Jiangsu south to Yunnan (except north-west), Guangxi and Guangdong, also eastern Laos and Vietnam (south to north-central Annam).
