Formerly treated as conspecific with Taiwan Hwamei (Garrulax taewanus), but differs significantly in plumage, morphometrics and genetics, and to some degree in voice.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• canorus (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  South-eastern China from southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi, Hubei, south-eastern Henan and southern Jiangsu south to Yunnan (except north-west), Guangxi and Guangdong, also eastern Laos and Vietnam (south to north-central Annam).
• owstoni (Rothschild, 1903)   -  Hainan I.
