Habitat
Tall, wet, natural grasslands, wet agricultural areas dominated by sugarcane and paddy interspersed with natural vegetation. From sea-level - 350 m.
Bangladesh (B), India (B), Nepal (B).

North-central India (Uttar Pradesh) and Nepal east to north-eastern India (Assam) and Bangladesh.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through drainage for agriculture, human encroachment, fire, grass harvesting, grazing by domestic stock (especially during chick rearing), commercial forestry plantations and dam and irrigation schemes, hunting and trapping for sport (cock fighting) and food, are the main threats.

Voice
Territorial call is long series of sharp 'chuill' notes, at rate of about 10 every 8 seconds.
Subspecies
Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus retains only Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus), Grey Francolin (Francolinus pondicerianus), Swamp Francolin (Francolinus gularis), Painted Francolin (Francolinus pictus) and Chinese Francolin (Francolinus pintadeanus) in Francolinus.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Within range, only likely to be confused with Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus) and Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus), differing from both by orange-rufous throat.
