First Described (Guide)
(Godwin-Austen & Walden, 1875)

Habitat
Montane broadleaved evergreen forest with undergrowth of bracken, ferns or Strobilanthes, on steep hillsides broken with rocks and large boulders covered with rich vegetation and green moss, thick, low, often thorny bushes, briars and dwarf bamboo, especially at the edge of evergreen forest and in clearings, often in dense undergrowth near water. From 1,200 - 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)
India (B) (NB).

Nagaland and northern Manipur, in north-eastern India.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2011) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction due to logging and clearance of forest for small-scale agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Spelaeornis chocolatinus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Long-tailed Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis chocolatinus), Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus), Chin Hills Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis oatesi) and Pale-throated Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis kinneari) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Chin Hills Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis oatesi), Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus) and Pale-throated Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis kinneari).

Similar Species
Tawny-breasted Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis longicaudatus) and Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus) which have shorter tails. Long-tailed Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis chocolatinus) is less strongly scaled than the Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus).
