Estimated population is unknown (2011) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss through logging and agricultural conversion is the main threat. Hunting and trapping may also be a problem.

Subspecies
Anorrhinus tickelli (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus tickelli) and Assam Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) following Rasmussen and Anderton (2005).
Forms superspecies with Assam Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) and are often considered conspecific, but differ in some features of plumage and in presence or absence of sexual dimorphism in bill colour.
