Vagrant to Hong Kong (China), Mongolia, South Korea.

Spizaetus nanus, Spizaetus lanceolatus, Spizaetus philippensis, Spizaetus pinskeri, Spizaetus nipalensis, Spizaetus alboniger and Spizaetus bartelsi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) and Spizaetus cirrhatus and Spizaetus floris (Gjershaug et al. 2004) have been transferred into the genus Nisaetus following Haring et al. (2006). Spizaetus africanus and Hieraaetus fasciatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have both been transferred into Aquila, also following Haring et al. (2006); and Hieraaetus kienerii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been transferred into the resurrected genus Lophotriorchis.

Forms superspecies with Blyth's Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus alboniger), Javan Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi), Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus lanceolatus), and North Philippine Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus philippensis).

Proposed subspecies fokiensis and whiteheadi of southern China not valid.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• orientalis (Temminck & Schlegel, 1844)   -  Japan.
• nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836)   -  Himalayas of India and Nepal east through southern China and Hainan to eastern China and Taiwan, and south to northern Indochina and northern Malay Peninsula; recently Vietnam.
• kelaarti Legge, 1878   -  South-western India (western Ghats) and Sri Lanka. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Legge's Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus kelaarti).
