Tundra, inland wetlands.

Range (Guide)
Canada (B) (NB), Japan (E) (NB), Mexico (NB), USA (B) (NB).

Vagrant to Marshall Islands.

Breeds across the tundra of Canada, Alaska (USA), and winters in southern North America including Mexico, and formerly Japan.
 
Population
Estimated population is 920,000 - 1,400,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Branta canadensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) and Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii) following AOU (2004).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucopareia (von Brandt, JF, 1836)   -  Aleutian Is. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis).
  • minima Ridgway, 1885   -  Coastal western Alaska. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis).
  • taverneri Delacour, 1951   -  Alaska Peninsula to Mackenzie Delta. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis).
  • hutchinsii (Richardson, 1832)   -  Central Canada. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis).
