Subspecies
Recent DNA studies indicate that this species' closest relative is Aldabra Drongo (Dicrurus aldabranus), following colonization of Aldabra from Madagascar less than 125,000 years ago, and also that it is more closely related to Mayotte Drongo (Dicrurus waldenii) than to the older Comoro Drongo (Dicrurus fuscipennis) and all were previously thought to be part of a superspecies that contained also Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus), Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis) and Velvet-mantled Drongo (Dicrurus modestus), but morphological and genetic differentiation too great to support such a relationship.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • potior (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1922)   -  Anjouan (Ndzuani), in central Comoro Is.
  • forficatus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Madagascar and some larger inshore islands, including Nosy Bé, Nosy Komba and Nosy Boraha (I Sainte Marie).
