Habitat
Deciduous woodlands with a well developed canopy and sparse shrub layer, avoiding understoreys with bamboo, outside forests along roadsides, in ploughed fields and undisturbed gardens.
Northern Ryukyu Is and Izu Is, off S; some move to adjacent Honshu and O-shima in winter.
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss, associated with timber production, tourist developments and road construction, nest-predation by Siberian Weasel Mustela sibirica, Large-billed Crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) and domestic cats, are the main threats.

Food
Fruit, seeds and, in summer, mainly invertebrates.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes considered conspecific with Brown-headed Thrush (Turdus chrysolaus).
Proposed subspecies yakushimensis purportedly larger and darker, with darker bill, but features not constant.
Similar Species
Male Brown-headed Thrush (Turdus chrysolaus) which has an olive-brown head with darker throat and orange-red top of breast. Female has indistinct pale supercilium and pale throat streaked brown.
