Habitat
Temperate forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry shrubland, rural gardens, plantations. From sea-level - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland), Japan, North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian), South Korea, Taiwan (China).

Sakhalin, Kuril Is, northern Japan, possibly also northern Korea. Non-breeding Japan, Ryukyu Is, south-eastern China, Taiwan and northern Philippines.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly treated as conspecific with Pale Thrush (Turdus pallidus) and sometimes also with Izu Thrush (Turdus celaenops) or Eyebrowed Thrush (Turdus obscurus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

orii Yamashina, 1929 - Kuril Islands. Winters to main Japanese islands and Ryukyu Is.
chrysolaus Temminck, 1831 - Sakhalin I. (Russia), Kurile Is. and Japan.
