First Described (Guide)
Swinhoe, 1863

Habitat
Subtropical broadleaved evergreen forest, cultivated fields where there are trees nearby, and even towns where there are gardens, mainly on small islands. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Japan (B) (NB), Philippines (B) (NB), Taiwan (China) (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Deforestation and hunting, commercial development through tourism, are the main threats.

Habits
Shy and difficult to observe. Typically feeding on fruits in the canopy.

Voice
Song is a long, fluty mournful note, suddenly rising and wavering near the end, 'po-aa-poaaoo', like a Japanese bamboo flute, deeper than but not as inflected as the White-bellied Pigeon (Treron sieboldii).

Subspecies
In past, sometimes placed in genus Sphenurus. Closely allied to Wedge-tailed Green-pigeon (Treron sphenurus) and White-bellied Pigeon (Treron sieboldii), and more distantly to Sumatran Green-pigeon (Treron oxyurus) species-group.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • permagnus Stejneger, 1887   -  Northern Ryukyu Is (Yakushima, Amami O-shima, Okinawa). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ryukyu Green-pigeon (Treron permagnus).
  • medioximus (Bangs, 1901)   -  Southern Ryukyu Is (Ishigaki, Iriomote, Yonaguni).
  • formosae Swinhoe, 1863   -  Mountains of Taiwan.
  • filipinus Hachisuka, 1952   -  Northern Philippines (Batan, Sabtang, Calayan, Camiguin Norte).
