Habitat
Broadleaf evergreen forest with fruiting trees. Occasionally urban parks and secondary forest. From sea-level - 2,300 m.

China (mainland) (B), Japan (B), Laos (B), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (B), Taiwan (China) (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Flocks congregate on the coast to drink saltwater, presumably to aid in digestion of some fruits.

Voice
A drwan-out, strongly inflected, mournful 'oh aooh' and a slightly more fluty 'ooaa aaoo' song.

Subspecies
In past, sometimes placed in genus Sphenurus. Closely allied to Wedge-tailed Green-pigeon (Treron sphenurus) and Whistling Green-Pigeon (Treron formosae), and more distantly to Sumatran Green-pigeon (Treron oxyurus) species-group. Several other subspecies described, but now considered invalid.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • sieboldii (Temminck, 1835)   -  Japan, mountains of Taiwan, and eastern China (Jiangsu, Fujian).
  • fopingensis Cheng, Tan & Sung, 1973   -  Central China (eastern Sichuan, southern Shaanxi).
  • murielae (Delacour, 1927)   -  South-central China (Guizhou, Guangxi, Hainan) through northern and central Vietnam (Tonkin, Annam) to extreme northern Thailand.
  • sororius (Swinhoe, 1866)   -  Taiwan.
