Subspecies
Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula) and Pale Crag-Martin (Ptyonoprogne obsoleta) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as species contra AERC TAC (2003) and Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include obsoleta as a subspecies of Hirundo fuligula.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
spatzi (Geyr von Schweppenburg, 1916) - Southern Algeria, south-western Libya and northern Chad. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
presaharica (Vaurie, 1953) - Southern Morocco, northern Mauritania and north-central Algeria. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
buchanani (Hartert, 1921) - Niger. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
obsoleta (Cabanis, 1850) - South-central, also northern Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
arabica (Reichenow, 1905) - Northern Chad to northern Sudan, south-western Arabia, northern Somalia and Socotra. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
perpallida (Vaurie, 1951) - North-eastern Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
pallida Hume, 1872 - Eastern Iran, southern Afghanistan and Pakistan. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula).
