Subspecies
Nesospiza acunhae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Inaccessible Finch (Nesospiza acunhae) (Inaccessible Island) and Nightingale Finch (Nesospiza questi) (Nightingale Island), while subspecies dunnei of Wilkins's Finch (Nesospiza wilkinsi) (Inaccessible Island) has been transferred to Inaccessible Finch (Nesospiza acunhae) following Ryan (2008) who provides compelling phylogenetic evidence for this arrangement and points out the morphological and vocal differences supporting the treatment of paraphyletic forms questi and wilkinsi as species.

Some consider subspecies questi to be a full species Nightingale Finch (Nesospiza questi).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • acunhae Cabanis, 1873   -  Inaccessible Island in the Tristan da Cunha Group.
  • questi P.R. Lowe, 1923   -  Nightingale Island (south Atlantic Ocean). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Nightingale Finch (Nesospiza questi).
  • dunnei Hagen, 1952   -  Coast and eastern interior of Inaccessible I. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Wilkins's Finch (Nesospiza wilkinsi).
  • fraseri Ryan, PG, 2008   -  Interior Inaccessible I.
