Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Crimson-crowned Flowerpecker (Dicaeum nehrkorni), Flame-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum erythrothorax), Ashy Flowerpecker (Dicaeum vulneratum), Red-capped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum geelvinkianum), Louisiade Flowerpecker (Dicaeum nitidum), Red-banded Flowerpecker (Dicaeum eximium) and Midget Flowerpecker (Dicaeum aeneum). Could be treated as conspecific with Red-capped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum geelvinkianum) and/or Louisiade Flowerpecker (Dicaeum nitidum).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ignotum Mees, 1964 - Gebe I, between Halmahera and NW New Guinea.
pectorale M�ller, 1843 - West Papuan Is (Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Misool) and north-western New Guinea (east to neck of Vogelkop).
