Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-bellied Fantail (Rhipidura hyperythra), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa), New Zealand Fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) and Mangrove Fantail (Rhipidura phasiana).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- albolimbata Salvadori, 1874 - Mountains of north-west, northern and eastern New Guinea.
- lorentzi van Oort, 1909 - Snow Mts and Central Highlands, in central New Guinea.
