Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Friendly Fantail (Rhipidura albolimbata), Grey Fantail (Rhipidura albiscapa), New Zealand Fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) and Mangrove Fantail (Rhipidura phasiana). Subspecies muelleri intergrades with castaneothorax in east.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
muelleri Gray, 1858 - Western New Guinea east to Astrolabe Bay, south to upper R Fly area and Okasa (Eastern Highlands).
hyperythra Gray, 1858 - Aru Is.
castaneothorax Ramsay, EP, 1879 - South-eastern New Guinea (eastern from Huon Peninsula and, in south, from R Angabunga).
