by Rolf A. de By from Anji Valley nr Mt Hagen Enga province, Papua New Guinea (call, display\/territorial)

Greater Lophorina (Lophorina superba) [XC26625]
by Hans Matheve from 1 km N 'Warili Lodge', below Tari Gap, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea (call)

Subspecies
Intergeneric hybridization with Long-tailed Paradigalla (Paradigalla carunculata), Western Parotia (Parotia sefilata), Carola's Parotia (Parotia carolae), Magnificent Riflebird (Lophorina magnifica), Black Sicklebill (Epimachus fastosus) and Magnificent Bird-of-paradise (Cicinnurus magnificus) recorded.

Proposed subspecies connectens (Dawong, in Herzog Mts), treated as synonym of latipennis. Proposed subspecies sphinx, described on basis of one immature male (like minor but considerably larger, with more reddish-brown on upperparts, eyestripe less extensive, forehead and neck lacking white flecks), is of unknown origin, but possibly from mountains of far south-eastern New Guinea. Validity unproven. Form named as "pseudoparotia" (based on single specimen from Hunstein Mts, in middle Sepik Mts) has been shown to be hybrid of present species and Carola's Parotia (Parotia carolae).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • superba (Pennant, 1781)   -  Vogelkop (Tamrau Mts and Arfak Mts), in north-western New Guinea.
  • niedda Mayr, 1930   -  Mt Wondiwoi (in Wandammen Peninsula), in north-western New Guinea.
  • feminina Ogilvie-Grant, 1915   -  Central Cordillera from Weyland Mts east to central New Guinea (Hindenburg Mts and Victor Emanuel Mts).
  • latipennis Rothschild, 1907   -  Eastern and north-eastern New Guinea in Central Highlands and eastern Highlands (east to Herzog Mts, Kuper Range and Ekuti Range), also Adelbert Mts and mountains of Huon Peninsula.
  • minor E. P. Ramsay, 1885   -  Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea (eastern probably from Seast of Wau).
  • addenda Iredale, 1948   -  Eastern ranges of New Guinea, from the Yuat-Strickland River Divide and the base of the south-eastern Peninsula, Papua New Guinea.
