Subspecies
Part of a species group that also includes Perplexing Scrubwren (Sericornis virgatus), Beccari's Scrubwren (Sericornis beccarii) and Large-billed Scrubwren (Sericornis magnirostra). Subspecies adelberti is intermediate between Large Scrubwren (Sericornis nouhuysi) and Perplexing Scrubwren (Sericornis virgatus), and sometimes placed with Perplexing Scrubwren (Sericornis virgatus). Subspecies stresemanni intergrades with oorti.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • cantans Mayr, 1930   -  North-western New Guinea (mountains of Vogelkop).
  • nouhuysi van Oort, 1909   -  Western New Guinea (Weyland Mts, Nassau Range, Snow Mts).
  • stresemanni Mayr, 1930   -  Central Highlands of eastern New Guinea (Hindenburg Range east to Schrader Range and Wahgi valley).
  • adelberti Pratt, 1982   -  North-eastern New Guinea (Adelbert Mts).
  • oorti Rothschild & Hartert, 1913   -  Mountains of Huon Peninsula and Herzog Mts, in eastern New Guinea.
  • monticola Mayr & Rand, 1936   -  South-eastern New Guinea (Wharton Range, Owen Stanley Range).
