Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical heavily degraded former forest, rural gardens and arable land.

Subspecies
Together with Cinnamon-browed Melidectes (Melidectes ochromelas), Vogelkop Melidectes (Melidectes leucostephes), Belford's Melidectes (Melidectes belfordi), Yellow-browed Melidectes (Melidectes rufocrissalis) and Huon Honeyeater (Melidectes foersteri) comprise a group of relatively large species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • torquatus Sclater, 1873   -  Mountains of Vogelkop, in north-western New Guinea.
  • nuchalis Mayr, 1936   -  Weyland Mts and southern slopes of Nassau Mts and Oranje Mts, in western and west-central New Guinea.
  • mixtus Rand, 1941   -  Upper slopes of Central Ranges of central New Guinea from Oranje Mts (Balim R region) east to Victor Emanuel Mts and Telefomin area.
  • polyphonus Mayr, 1931   -  Mountains of north-eastern inland New Guinea, including Adelbert Mts, and from Bismarck Range (upper Wahgi region) east to Herzog and Kuper Ranges.
  • cahni Mertens, 1923   -  Mountains of Huon Peninsula, in north-eastern New Guinea.
  • emilii Meyer, AB, 1886   -  Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea.
