Subspecies
Together with Vogelkop Melidectes (Melidectes leucostephes), Belford's Melidectes (Melidectes belfordi), Yellow-browed Melidectes (Melidectes rufocrissalis), Huon Honeyeater (Melidectes foersteri) and Ornate Melidectes (Melidectes torquatus) comprise a group of relatively large species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice. Birds in Weyland Mts intermediate between nominate subspecies and batesi, and currently included within latter.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ochromelas (Meyer, 1875)   -  Mountains of Vogelkop (Tamrau Mts, Arfak Mts) and Wandammen Mts, in north-western New Guinea.
  • batesi (Sharpe, 1886)   -  Weyland Mts, southern slopes of Nassau Mts and mountains of south-eastern New Guinea.
  • lucifer Mayr, 1931   -  Mountains of Huon Peninsula, in north-eastern New Guinea.
