Forms a superspecies with Dusky Friarbird (Philemon fuscicapillus), Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis), Philemon plumigenis, Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), New Britain Friarbird (Philemon cockerelli), New Ireland Friarbird (Philemon eichhorni) and White-naped Friarbird (Philemon albitorques). Formerly suggested that all may belong to a single species, or that present species may be conspecific with first three of these.
