(Wallace, 1862)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest and plantations. From sea-level to 600 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Morotai, Halmahera and, probably, Bacan, in northern Moluccas.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Forest habitat loss and agricultural development are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Grey-necked Friarbird (Philemon subcorniculatus), Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis), Philemon plumigenis, Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), New Britain Friarbird (Philemon cockerelli), New Ireland Friarbird (Philemon eichhorni) and White-naped Friarbird (Philemon albitorques). Formerly suggested that all may belong to a single species, or that present species may be conspecific with first three of these.

Similar Species
The Dusky-brown Oriole (Oriolus phaeochromus) is almost identical, but smaller, with blunter bill, darker underparts and without bare pinkish skin around eye.
