Subspecies
Monarcha malaitae has tentatively been referred to as a separate species from Solomons Pied Monarch (Symposiachrus barbatus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993, Coates et al. 2006), but Filardi & Smith (2005) merely indicate the need for further work, so BirdLife International does not currently recognise the split.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
barbatus (Ramsay, 1879) - Bougainville in Papua New Guinea and Choiseul, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, and other small islands in the Solomon Islands.
malaitae (Mayr, 1931) - Malaita in the Solomon Islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malaita Monarch (Symposiachrus malaitae).
