Often considered conspecific with Long-tailed Hermit (Phaethornis superciliosus), but with disjunct distributions the two are probably better treated as forming a superspecies. Some forms currently listed as subspecies are well differentiated, and future studies may result in specific separation of griseoventer, mexicanus and baroni. Indeed, mexicanus (incorporating griseoventer) has been recognized by some.

Proposed subspecies veraecrucis of southern Mexico and cassinii from Panama and north-western Colombia are inseparable from longirostris and cephalus respectively.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

• griseoventer Phillips, AR, 1962   -  Western Mexico (Nayarit to Colima). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Mexican Hermit (Phaethornis mexicanus).
• mexicanus Hartert, 1897   -  South-western Mexico (western Guerrero to south-eastern Oaxaca). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mexican Hermit (Phaethornis mexicanus).
• longirostris (DeLattre, 1843)   -  Southern Mexico (northern Oaxaca) to northern Honduras.
• cephalus (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1848)   -  Eastern Honduras to north-western Colombia.
• susurrus Bangs, 1901   -  Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia).
• baroni Hartert, 1897   -  Western Ecuador and north-western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ecuadorian Hermit (Phaethornis baroni).
