Forms a superspecies with Rota White-eye (Zosterops rotensis), Citrine White-eye (Zosterops semperi) and Yap Plain White-eye (Zosterops hypolais) and all formerly considered conspecific, but differ in plumage, vocalizations and behaviour, and treatment as separate species supported by DNA-DNA hybridization and analyses of mitochondrial DNA. Subspecies saypani sometimes treated as a full species, but this not supported by mtDNA data, although differs vocally from nominate. Further study is required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• saypani ! Dubois, AJC, 1902   -  Northern Mariana Is. (Tinian, Agiguan and Saipan). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Saipan White-eye (Zosterops saypani).
• conspicillatus ! (Kittlitz, 1832)   -  Mariana Islands.
