Subspecies
Micronesian Kingfisher (Todiramphus cinnamominus), Palau Kingfisher (Todiramphus pelewensis) and Pohnpei Kingfisher (Todiramphus reichenbachii) (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as Todiramphus cinnamominus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Closely related to Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) and Talaud Kingfisher (Todiramphus enigma). Extinct subspecies miyakoensis of Miyako-jima (southern Ryukyu Is) sometimes considered a full species, but information on bill colour lacking. Probably better treated tentatively as subspecies of this species.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- cinnamominus (Swainson, 1821) - Guam (southern northern Marianas).
- pelewensis (Wiglesworth, 1891) - Palau Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Palau Kingfisher (Todiramphus pelewensis).
- reichenbachii Hartlaub, 1852 - Pohnpei (eastern Caroline Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pohnpei Kingfisher (Todiramphus reichenbachii).
- miyakoensis ! (Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1919) - Myaku I. (Ryukyu Is., Japan). Extinct. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ryukyu Kingfisher (Todiramphus miyakoensis).
