Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical moist shrubland. From sea-level - 1,450 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cote dIvoire, Central African Republic, Congo, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2012) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Chestnut-bellied Helmet-shrike (Prionops caniceps) and Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike (Prionops rufiventris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Prionops caniceps following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Forms a superspecies, and often considered conspecific, with Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike (Prionops rufiventris).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • caniceps (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  South-western Mali (including Mandingues Mts), Guinea and Sierra Leone east to Ghana and southern Togo.
  • harterti (Neumann, 1908)   -  Benin, Nigeria and western Cameroon.
