Subspecies
Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera) and Red-billed Pytilia (Pytilia lineata) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Pytilia phoenicoptera following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Probably forms a superspecies with Red-faced Pytilia (Pytilia hypogrammica) and Red-billed Pytilia (Pytilia lineata), and has been considered conspecific with Red-billed Pytilia (Pytilia lineata). Previously thought to be close to Orange-winged Pytilia (Pytilia afra), but such a relationship not supported by results of molecular-genetic studies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phoenicoptera Swainson, 1837 - Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, southern Mali and northern Ivory Coast east to south-eastern Burkina Faso, Benin and northern Nigeria.
emini Hartert, 1899 - Cameroon, southern Chad, Central African Republic, southern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo and northern Uganda.
