Subspecies
Arremon taciturnus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus) and Half-collared Sparrow (Arremon semitorquatus) following SACC (2005). The genus Arremon has been expanded following SACC (2007) to include the genera Arremon, Buarremon and Lysurus.

Until recently considered conspecific with Half-collared Sparrow (Arremon semitorquatus). In recent study found to be parapatric with latter, and no intermediate specimens or evidence of gene flow.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • axillaris Sclater, PL, 1854   -  East of base of eastern Andes in Venezuela (Portuguesa south to eastern Táchira) and Colombia (Boyacá, Casanare and Meta). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-mandibled Sparrow (Arremon axillaris).
  • taciturnus (Hermann, 1783)   -  Eastern Colombia (in R Orinoco valley), Venezuela (Bolívar and Amazonas), the Guianas, central and north-eastern Brazil (eastern from Mato Grosso and Amazonas, south to Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo) and north-eastern Bolivia (Beni).
  • nigrirostris Sclater, PL, 1886   -  South-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno) and northern Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba).
