Subspecies
Myrmeciza stictothorax (Meyer de Schauensee 1982) is now considered a subspecies of Black-throated Antbird (Myrmophylax atrothorax) following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Genus appears not to represent a monophyletic grouping, but traditional arrangement maintained pending further phylogenetic study. Affinities uncertain; possibly not closely related to other members of genus. Taxon named as stictothorax (lower R Tapajós, in Brazil) considered a separate species by some authors and a subspecies of present species by others, but recordings and specimens obtained near type locality suggest that it is a plumage variant of subspecies melanura. Further, described subspecies obscurata (eastern Peru, western Brazil) and griseiventris (western Bolivia) considered inseparable from latter, which itself highly variable. Re-examination of populations south of R Amazon, employing other data (e.g. genetic) in addition to morphological studies, is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • metae (Meyer de Schauensee, 1947)   -  Central Colombia (Meta, western Guaviare).
  • atrothorax (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Southern Venezuela (southern Bolívar, Amazonas), extreme east-central Colombia (Guainía, Vaupés), the Guianas and northern Amazonian Brazil (both banks of upper and east of lower R Negro, east to Amapá).
  • tenebrosa (Zimmer, JT, 1932)   -  North of Amazon in eastern Ecuador (Napo, Pastaza), north-eastern Peru (Loreto) and northern Brazil (west of lower R Negro).
  • maynana (Taczanowski, 1882)   -  North-central Peru south of R Marañón (Loreto west of R Huallaga).
  • melanura (Ménétries, 1835)   -  South of R Amazon in eastern Peru (east of R Huallaga), locally in western and central Brazil (upper regions of tributaries of R Amazon and along lower R Tapajós, and east to southern Pará and south-central Mato Grosso) and northern and central Bolivia.
