Dusky-throated Antshrike (Thamnomanes ardesiacus) [XC464820]

Subspecies
Thamnomanes ardesiacus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Saturnine Antshrike (Thamnomanes saturninus) and Dusky-throated Antshrike (Thamnomanes ardesiacus) following SACC (2005).
Relationships to other genera unclear. Species currently placed in genus appear to be related on basis of morphology and behaviour, although their nest architecture is somewhat variable. Sometimes been placed in genus Dysithamnus. Forms a superspecies with Saturnine Antshrike (Thamnomanes saturninus) and has been treated as conspecific. A taxonomic study of populations is needed. Subspecies appear to intergrade. Specimens in northern part of range of nominate approaching obidensis in extent of black on male throat, and region in eastern Colombia that is said to separate subspecies is poorly known ornithologically. Further research is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ardesiacus (Sclater,PL & Salvin, 1868) - South-central and south-eastern Colombia (near base of Andes southern from Meta and central Caquetá, also extreme south-eastern Amazonas) south to eastern Peru (except south-eastern Loreto south of Amazon and east of R Ucayali), north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, north-western La Paz) and adjacent Brazil (south-eastern Acre).
obidensis (Snethlage, E, 1914) - Eastern and southern Venezuela (Delta Amacuro, Bolívar, Amazonas), the Guianas, eastern Colombia (Guainía, eastern Vaupés) and northern Amazonian Brazil (R Negro drainage to northern Pará and Amapá).
