Vagrant to Oman.

Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca), Hume's Whitethroat (Sylvia althaea) and Desert Whitethroat (Sylvia minula) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993), cross-regional species, are retained as separate species contra AERC TAC (2003) who include althaea and minula as subspecies of Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca).

Systematics of this species and Desert Whitethroat (Sylvia minula) and Margelanic Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia margelanica) controversial. All traditionally considered conspecific.

Birds from Alai and Pamir Ranges east to Tien Shan sometimes separated as subspecies monticola, but considered not reliably distinguishable from those in rest of range.
