Subspecies
Usually considered to include Chaco Owl (Strix chacoensis) as a subspecies. Subspecies sanborni described from single immature specimen, and is perhaps not acceptable.
Strix rufipes (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-legged Owl (Strix rufipes) and Chaco Owl (Strix chacoensis) following SACC (2005).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rufipes King, 1828 - From central Chile and extreme west-central Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego.
sanborni Wheeler, 1938 - Chiloe I, off south-central Chile.
