Subspecies
African Citril (Crithagra citrinelloides), Yellow-browed Citril (Crithagra frontalis) and East African Citril (Crithagra hyposticta) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include frontalis and hypostictus as subspecies of African Citril (Crithagra citrinelloides).

Forms a superspecies with Black-faced Canary (Crithagra capistrata).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • citrinelloides (Rüppell, 1840)   -  Northern Eritrea to central and southern Ethiopia.

  • frontalis Reichenow, 1904   -  Highlands of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to Uganda and northern Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-browed Citril (Crithagra frontalis).
  • kikuyensis (Neumann, 1905)   -  South-western Kenya.
  • hypostictus (Reichenow, 1904)   -  South-eastern Kenya to extreme north-eastern Zambia and Malawi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, East African Citril (Crithagra hyposticta).
