Subspecies
African Citril (Crithagra citrinelloides), Yellow-browed Citril (Crithagra frontalis) and East African Citril (Crithagra hyposticta) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include frontalis and hypostictus as subspecies of African Citril (Crithagra citrinelloides).
citrinelloides (Rüppell, 1840) - Northern Eritrea to central and southern Ethiopia.
brittoni Traylor, 1970 - South-eastern Sudan and extreme western Kenya. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of East African Citril (Crithagra hyposticta).
frontalis Reichenow, 1904 - Highlands of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to Uganda and northern Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-browed Citril (Crithagra frontalis).
kikuyensis (Neumann, 1905) - South-western Kenya.
hypostictus (Reichenow, 1904) - South-eastern Kenya to extreme north-eastern Zambia and Malawi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, East African Citril (Crithagra hyposticta).
