Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera) and Lineated Pytilia (Pytilia lineata) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Pytilia phoenicoptera following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Probably forms a superspecies with Yellow-winged Pytilia (Pytilia hypogrammica) and Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera), and has been considered conspecific with Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera). Previously thought to be close to Orange-winged Pytilia (Pytilia afra), but such a relationship not supported by results of molecular-genetic studies.
