Mountain Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus sindianus) now includes Caucasian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus lorenzii) previously treated as distinct by Sibley and Monroe (1993).

Forms a superspecies with, and until recently treated as conspecific with, Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and Iberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus ibericus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• canariensis (Hartwig, 1886)   -  Western Canary Is (La Palma, Hierro, Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria).
• exsul Hartert, 1907   -  Lanzarote, in north-eastern Canary Is.
