Vagrant to Ecuador, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia), Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi) and Hermit Warbler (Setophaga occidentalis), and Black-throated Grey Warbler (Setophaga nigrescens) is closely related to this group. Probably the sister-species of Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) and has occasionally been considered conspecific. Has hybridized with Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi). A hybrid involving Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) and (probably) Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens) recorded at Long Point (in Ontario) in 1990. Subspecies weakly differentiated.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • virens (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Breeds in southern Canada (extreme eastern British Columbia east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) and southern in north-eastern USA to Wisconsin, southern Michigan and New England, and in Appalachians to northern Georgia and Alabama, with isolated population in central Arkansas; migrates to eastern Middle America and Caribbean, also locally Pacific slope of southern Mexico, and in smaller numbers to southern USA (southern Texas, southern Florida) and northern Colombia and northern Venezuela.
  • waynei Bangs, 1918   -  Breeds coastal eastern USA (extreme south-eastern Virginia south to southern South Carolina).
