Subspecies
Sometimes regarded as forming a superspecies with, or even as conspecific with, Menetries's Warbler (Sylvia mystacea). They are part of a group that also contains Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata), Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda), Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica), Tristram's Warbler (Sylvia deserticola), Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), Ruppell's Warbler (Sylvia ruppeli) and Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax). Geographical variation within each subspecies largely clinal, becoming more complex in insular areas (especially Canary Is); subspecies leucogastra sometimes synonymized with nominate, but recent study suggests its revalidation. Recently described subspecies valverdei represents a new stage in the variability of the species, probably related to particular ecological conditions in the Sahara Desert.

Proposed subspecies pasiphae (described from Crete) and carmichaellowi (south-eastern Italy) considered to fall within range of variation of nominate, and included within it. Subspecies norrisae, confined to Faiyum, in Egypt, considered extinct.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • melanocephala (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Iberia across the northern Mediterranean to western Turkey. Extends into the Maghreb from Iberia, and into Libya from Italy via Sicily. Migrates to the Sahel and oases in the Sahara in winter.
  • leucogastra (Ledru, 1810)   -  Canary Islands. Ossible vagrant to eastern islands and Maghreb.
  • momus (Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1833)   -  Near East.
  • norissae ! Nicoll, 1917   -  Nile Delta region. Extinct since around 1940.
  • valverdei Cabot, J & Urdiales, 2005   -  From Tiznit (Morocco) south to the Tropic of Cancer, inland to the edge of the Sahara.
