Vagrant to Bahrain (NB), Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Israel, Italy, Kuwait (NB), Netherlands, Norway, Oman (NB), Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Subspecies
Phylloscopus inornatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Inornate Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus) and Hume's / Buff-browed Warbler (Phylloscopus humei) following AERC TAC (2003) (see Sangster et al. 2002).

Subspecies mandellii sometimes treated as a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • humei (Brooks, 1878)   -  Breeds south-central Russia (Altai, Sayan and southern Baikal Ranges), western Mongolia, north-eastern and eastern Kazakhstan, north-western China (Junggar Basin) and Tien Shan south to north-eastern Afghanistan and Kashmir, thence east to central Nepal. Non-breeding north-eastern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and northern and eastern India east to Bangladesh and extreme southern China (southern Xizang).
  • mandellii (Brooks, WE, 1879)   -  Breeds central China (eastern Qinghai east to Shaanxi, south to northern Yunnan). Non-breeding southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and north-eastern India east to Bangladesh east to western and north-western Myanmar, north-western Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
