Vagrant to Algeria, Faroe Islands, Jordan, Malta, Nigeria, Portugal, Qatar.

Belongs to a probably monophyletic group of small plain-coloured species that also includes Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), African Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus) and Blyth's Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum), along with the closely related Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) superspecies (comprising also White-browed Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus tangorum) and Blunt-winged Warbler (Acrocephalus concinens)). Probably closer to Blyth's Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum) than to Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus). Has hybridized with Blyth's Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum) in Finland and with Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) in England.
